Eight names to watch in jewellery and silversmithing
Discover the early-career craftspeople selected for the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s Spotlighting Getting Started 2027 programme
By Amy Wakeham
Every year, the Goldsmiths’ Centre selects a small group of emerging jewellers and silversmiths for Spotlighting Getting Started, a development programmes for early-career makers that culminates in a public exhibition at the Goldsmiths’ Centre in January and February 2027.
Eight makers have been named as the first cohort of Spotlighting Getting Started 2027: Alexander Budd of 35.35, Jorge Mario Agudelo of J Mario Jewellery, Kung-Hsuan Chang, Misha McLean, JiangLing Wang, Céline Munisso, Xiaoyu Li and Karen Moon. The judging panel included jewellery journalist Rachael Taylor, fine jeweller Darren Sherwood, and members of the Goldsmiths’ Centre team. Each of the craftspeople had taken part in Getting Started earlier this year, the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s annual week-long training programme focused on running a creative business. A second cohort of participants will be announced this autumn.
As well as being part of the 2027 exhibition, Spotlighting Getting Started makers will be given further training on how to best present their work to the public. This will include taking part in online talks organised by the Goldsmiths’ Centre in September and October that will offer audiences insights into the makers' creative practices, inspirations and ambitions.
“Spotlighting Getting Started provides UK-based early-career makers with the chance to translate their learning into real-world practice,” says Charlotte Dew, head of public programmes at the Goldsmiths’ Centre. “Through a series of assignments, participants build core professional skills – such as interview preparation, effective photography and promoting their work online. Each year, we see their confidence grow, helping them expand their businesses and present their work at events across the UK and internationally.”
