Bridging the gap between craft and commerciality

At Get Stoned gem fair in Brighton this May, Rachael Taylor will be in conversation with jeweller Emma Madden of Shimell & Madden.

The talk will centre on how to bring together two things often at odds with one another in the jewellery world: craft and commerciality. Using Emma’s insight and experience as a jeweller using traditional techniques, and Rachael’s wider lens as a journalist and editor, it will explore how to build a successful business grounded in craftsmanship and without sacrificing quality or integrity. Advice on choosing the right gemstones for your work will also be included.

Emma Madden began her jewellery business in 2010 alongside co-founder Luke Shimell. From the start, they have been committed to traditional craftsmanship, fabricating each piece by hand in their East London studio. They create considered pieces, inspired by geometry, in 18ct gold and gemstones, which are stocked in a selection of boutiques across the UK. Members of the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers, their work has earned them multiple awards and industry recognition.
